Agath

Page history last edited by Thomas 3 yrs ago

Agath is of course the diminutive name most know the isolated kingdom to the far north and west of the Beharion riddled wastes one must cross to reach the dukeless Duchy. The proper name is The Eternal Defiance of Agath against Interference which is shortened by its citizens. It's hard to blame them for that. One must be plain and take steps to keep seperate the kingdom of Agath from the chill presence Agath itself, of course. While Agath the nation has endured nearly as long at the empires of the south, Agath the entity claimes to be older still.

In the Compendium of a Thousand Winters Fallen in Retreat from Death the nameless writer, delerious from the consumption of the powdered essence of tomb beetles (those black scarabs once rendered and eaten by kings and potentates alike to produce vivid grey dreams that persisted into waking) and self-proclaimed 'addict of death, an addict who hates the very teat he must suckle from' seeks, and eventually receives, an audience with Agath and seeks to bargain the secret of the ageless one's continued existence from him. Agath at first laughs at his entreaties, then cruelly mocks him before challenging the writer to a game of opal cards to decide which of the two of them shall gain his desired end. Agath loses the game, but informs the narrator that what he desires most is an end to the tedium of his long existence, which has again been denied him. He shares the secret of his long life, and reveals himself to be naught but a obsidian skeleton rimmed with blue flames concealed behind slithering black robes whose tatters knit and rend asunder in an endless whispering dance. Horrified, the author retreats from this form of immortality which preserves only the will, and not the pleasures of life itself.

If Agath ever existed, or still exists today, is unknown. The nation named for him endures amidst the black ice of the far north, when the sun rarely sets and the wydderkin lope amid the crags.
